September Book Pick:
In The Song of the Dodo, David Quammen examines how natural islands are ripe grounds for evolution. When the island principal is transposed upon the modern landscape, where urban expansion and industrialized agriculture are leaving wildlife on islands of shrinking habitat, he exposes how islands are also rife with extinction. As he says in the text, “An ecosystem is a tapestry of species and relationships. Chop away a section, isolate that section, and there arises the problem of unraveling.”
