02. Article pick: Why giant squid, the once mythical kraken of the deep, are still mystifying scientists 150 years after they were discovered

This article in Business Insider discusses the history of giant squids and why humans are still so fascinated with their mythology. Told through photos, the article details how giant squids went from a legend of the sea, to a scientific possibility, to a real, discovered species. To this day though, they are largely a mystery to scientists as they are such evasive creatures. Very little of their habits are known.

03. Book pick: Giant Squid

“Giant Squid” by Candace Fleming, illustrated by Eric Rohmann, is a well-regarded children’s book about these elusive creatures. In this beautiful and clever nonfiction picture book about the giant squid, Fleming and Rohmann explore, both visually and poetically, this hidden creature's mysterious life.

04. Video pick: Scientists Reveal Proof Giant Kraken Squid Actually Exists

This video does a great job of creating primal fear in the viewer of what would happen in the incredibly, extremely unlikely scenario that a person is attacked by a giant squid. It discusses how giant squids were just recently proven to exist, and how scientists have estimated that there could be giant squids that are over 60 feet long. The biology of giant squids are incredible, and hopefully soon more will be known about them.

05. Quote of the Week

“I'd like to see the giant squid. Nobody has ever seen one. I could tell you people who have spent thousands and thousands of pounds trying to see giant squid. I mean, we know they exist because we have seen dead ones. But I have never seen a living one. Nor has anybody else.”

             — David Attenborough
