02. Article pick: Antarctic: Giant iceberg breaks away in front of UK station
The visible portion of an iceberg, also known as the tip, is only about 10% of its total volume. The majority of the iceberg lies beneath the water, making them deceptive and potentially dangerous to ships. Photo by Alexander Hafemann, Unsplash
This article in the BBC details an iceberg that is nearly 600 square miles big that recently broke off from the Antarctic ice shelf. It was an expected break, and scientists believe it was due to a natural process, not climate change. A follow-up article has been published that follows the movement of this new, enormous iceberg as it drifts into the south Atlantic Ocean.
03. Book pick: Chasing Icebergs: How Frozen Freshwater Can Save the Planet
“Chasing Icebergs: How Frozen Freshwater Can Save the Planet” by Matthew H. Birkhold was published earlier in 2023 and details how harvesting icebergs for drinking water in the face of climate change could have a dramatic impact on human’s existence. In this book, Birkhold travels around the globe, talking to experts who give their take on how, and if, this is a road humans should take. It is a “kaleidoscopic history of humans’ relationship with icebergs, and offers an urgent assessment of the technological, cultural, and legal obstacles we must overcome to harness this freshwater resource.” Birkhold is a professor at The Ohio State University, focusing on law, environmental humanities, intellectual property, and Indigenous studies.
