Exploring the remote canyon country of southeast Utah. Photo by David Kartchner

01. Photographer pick: David Kartchner

As a physical therapist in rural southeast Utah, David Kartchner spends a lot of time driving to see patients and comes across some fascinating, often hidden scenery along the way. At first, the hobby only went as far as posting photos for his family, but as he began paying closer attention to light and perspective and the history behind the canyons he soon picked up a following. Now Kartchner has his own photo page, @sanjuancountyadventures, where he shares the diverse landscapes and hidden alcoves of his travels with everyone.

All photos are taken on his iPhone 11! Check him out at @sanjuancountyadventures

02. Article pick: '12 Interesting Facts About Mount Kilimanjaro'

Standing 19,341 feet above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world and the highest point on the African continent. It takes five to eight days — at grueling altitudes — for climbers to make it to the summit and back, and though the trek has become a popular bucket list item for many, few actually know much about the infamous mountain.

Give this a read to learn about speed records to the top, how the mountain was formed, the predicted future of the summit and much more.

"There and Back: Photographs from the Edge" by Jimmy chin. Photo by KINUTE

03. Book pick: 'There and Back: Photographs from the Edge'

You may remember him from the 2019 “Free Solo” film, but Jimmy Chin has lived 10 lifetime's worth of adventure, much of which before the groundbreaking film came out.

Chin has built a career taking photos at the edges of the world, climbing some of the most remote and unknown places on Earth and capturing revolutionary achievements along the way. “There and Back: Photographs from the Edge” is Chin’s first collection of his adventure photography taken from 1999 to 2017, featuring some of the most memorable moments of outdoor athletes doing what they love most. Brief passages of insightful text alongside the many photos help tell the full story of his extraordinary life, mapped in chronological order.

This book will give you a new perspective and just might inspire you to take on your next challenge. You can find it at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or for backorder on Thriftbooks.
