02. Article pick: 'Giving Thanks on National Public Lands Day'
National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. It is held annually on the fourth Saturday of September and was established to promote popular recreation and volunteer conservation of public lands. This year it took place on Sept. 25.
A celebration of National Public Lands Day, "Giving Thanks on National Public Lands Day" emphasizes the significance of these efforts through personal memories and tributes to organizations that work to carry the public lands legacy. It sheds light on the major challenges in need of attention — like conservation funding, legislations and chronic wasting disease — and encourages folks to use their voice by joining a number of listed organizations.
Author Land Tawney is the executive director of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. He is a fifth generation Montanan and has been practicing conservation ethic since his youth. For more information, visit backcountryhunters.org.
"The Art of the National Parks" by Fifty-Nine Parks.
03. Book pick: ‘The Art of the National Parks’
“The Art of the National Parks” is a comprehensive display of the Fifty-Nine Parks Print Series, a collection of original posters of all of the national parks created by leading artists from around the world. The heart and soul of the series stems from a joint passion for printmaking and the country’s national parks. It was founded to “get park nerds into posters and poster nerds into the parks.” This new book collection allows outdoor enthusiasts and art lovers alike to explore the striking scenes of these sacred open spaces through the eyes of contemporary artists.
With informative write-ups and fun facts about all 63 national parks beside each poster print, as well as some sentimental storytelling behind Fifty-Nine Parks’ mission, the book successfully captures the authenticity of each place within its pages.
The book is currently sold out on 59parks.net but is available through third-party sellers. Two percent of each sale is donated to organizations that conserve the national parks.
